In the ancient villages of Huizhou, there exists an ancient and mysterious art of light and shadow. It carries the prayers of a thousand years and shines with the brilliance of culture—this is the Huizhou Fish Lantern.

The Huizhou Fish Lantern is not only a treasure of traditional craftsmanship but also a reflection of the local people’s aspiration for a better life. Every Spring Festival, as night falls, the ancient villages are illuminated by fish lanterns, as if time has been traversed, bringing us back to an era filled with poetry and warmth.
The history of the Huizhou Fish Lantern can be traced back to the Southern Song Dynasty, with a history of hundreds of years. It is said that the fish lantern was initially created to “use water to control fire,” praying for the village to be free from fire disasters. Over time, this activity gradually evolved into an important folk custom during the Spring Festival, symbolizing “abundance every year” and “good fortune.”

In the ancient villages of Huizhou, the fish lantern is not only a festival decoration but also a symbol of family cohesion. Every year from the 13th to the 16th day of the first lunar month, villagers gather together to make and dance with fish lanterns, praying for peace and prosperity.
During the Spring Festival every year, the fish lantern activities in Huizhou reach their climax. Villagers light up the fish lanterns and move through the narrow alleys of the ancient villages. The lanterns glide through the night, resembling swimming dragons.

Visitors can join in, making fish lanterns with their own hands to experience the charm of traditional craftsmanship. They can also follow the lantern procession to experience a magical journey of light and shadow.
